This week we’d like to feature some music that The Beatles recorded for the BBC in 1963. Both songs can be found on the 1994 Live at The BBC compilation (a must-have for Beatles fans).
We chose these songs because they are prime examples of what The Beatles could do with a cover version. The first song is a frenzied version of the Chuck Berry classic “Too Much Monkey Business.” The second track is a cover of the relatively unknown Lieber & Stoller song “Some Other Guy.”
But wait, there’s more. “Some Other Guy” just happens to be the song The Beatles are performing in the only filmed footage of The Beatles playing at the Cavern Club. It also has the distinction of being the oldest known footage of The Beatles playing with Ringo Starr. The video was shot in August of 1962, and Ringo had only joined the week before. So gaze at a piece of music history and enjoy the hidden gem, “Some Other Guy.” Twice.
