Here is some music for a slow holiday weekend. What do you think of when you think of Roxy Music? Me? I used to think of lounge music, crooning and John Hughes movies. I was wrong.
You see, there was a time when Roxy Music was at the vanguard of the Glam movement with a hard sound that sounded a LOT like the Velvet Underground. Makeup, costumes, androgyny, synthesizers -all the elements of Glam are there. But it’s their sound that sets them apart.
The following three clips are from their first two years, 1972-1973 when a gentleman by the name of Brian Eno was their synthesizer player. You may have heard of him. He’s only one of the most accomplished record producers in music history, producing classic albums for Talking Heads, U2, Devo, David Bowie and Coldplay. Enjoy.
