Recorded 47 years ago today! This underrated song appeared on the Beatles For Sale LP in 1964. Between September of 1963 and September of 1964 The Beatles recorded three complete studio albums, additional singles and EPs containing songs not on the albums, filmed a feature-length motion picture, and toured the world. So they can be excused for being both creatively and physically spent when recording Beatles For Sale. This song, though, shows little evidence of that weariness. Before John’s forays into self reflection (“Help!”, “In My Life”) and his terrifying attempt at writing a song from the point of view of a possessive drunken boyfriend (“Run For Your Life”), we have John playing the role of the spurned, intoxicated introvert. Quite possibly the first recorded emo in rock history.
