It Was 20 Years Ago Today

If you can believe it, which I know I hardly can, it’s been 20 years since the release of Nirvana’s classic “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” The record label, not to mention the band, didn’t intend for the song to become a smash hit. They intended the follow-up single, “In Bloom,” to be the big hit, but as history shows – it wasn’t meant to be.

What I love about this performance, from the Live! Tonight Sold Out!!! video, is how the crowd is ready to rock, but then Kurt throws them for a loop, singing like a lounge act, and leaving the crowd unsure of how to respond. They settle for clapping as Kurt keeps going with the decidedly un-grunge vocals.

Woah that was 20 years ago. Man I feel really old all of the sudden. As for the lounge act singing, my guess is that Cobain’s voice was shot. Smells like teen spirit isn’t the kind of song that a person can sing every day on tour. It sounded horrible.

And its funny how it turned out the drummer was the musical genius in the band. Nirvana made some cool music for a little bit, but Foo Fighters have been the greatest rock band for years.
