In another indication that Jon Huntsman appeals to younger conservatives, the College Republican National Convention has selected him to give the keynote address:
Former Ambassador Jon Huntsman will be the keynote speaker at the College Republican National Committee’s 2011 convention, addressing a June 29 banquet at the Renaissance Marriott in Washington. The audience will include some 500-700 young GOP activists, mostly current college students, and CRNC spokesman Rob Lockwood described it as a key opportunity to win over GOP youth: “Our speakers have an unparalleled opportunity to connect with young leaders, all of whom are eager to get involved in the 2012 process.”
Considering the majority of younger conservatives are less inclined to be concerned with social issues, they are a natural voting block for Huntsman’s more moderate stance on issues like gay marriage. This convention will also have a lot of young talent to help with campaigning in the months ahead and Huntsman should have his pick of the lot. It’s also interesting to note that despite the earlier press analysis that Huntsman wouldn’t appeal to the GOP primary voters what we see instead is Huntsman steadily gaining more attention and support. I am confident this trend will continue as more and more people get to know Jon Huntsman.
