I started out this week’s Bluesday selection just wanting to play some Albert King. After all, I’ve already played the other two Blues Guitar Kings, B.B. and Freddie. But then I found this video of Albert King and none other than Stevie Ray Vaughan playing the Elmore James classic “The Sky Is Crying.” My choice was made.
An aging Albert King holds his own against the rising blues star of the moment (this was 1983, the same year as Vaughan’s debut solo album, Texas Flood). What he lacks in speed and precision he makes up for in sheer intensity. But, then again, he was always like that. I’ve included a bonus video from the early seventies which show King ripping through a solo with his trademark “Flying V” and a monster tone. Enjoy.
