No offense to Arcade Fire, but I don’t recall the last time I saw so many critics in agreement as they were on their prediction that Recovery would bring Eminem his first major Grammy win. It could be due to a number of factors, but the cynic in me has to look at Em’s lawsuit victory:
This new ruling will entitle Eminem and his producers a 50-50 split for iTunes and other digital licensed recordings. This ruling has the potential to turn the entire struggling music industry on its head. It will likely affect the way financial deals between artists and record labels are made in the future, so this is a major ruling. Is it good for the industry or bad? That answer remains to be seen. It seems like the changes may be passed on to consumers as a price increase for online music downloads.
I have a sneaking suspicion this isn’t the last time Marshall will get snubbed by the music industry, but considering that winning an award like the People’s Choice speaks more than the opinion of the Grammy voters, I hope he keeps laughing all the way to the bank.
