An interesting report from the UK: Alcohol ‘more harmful than heroin’ says Prof David Nutt
The findings run contrary to the government’s long-established drug classification system, but the paper’s authors argue that their system – based on the consensus of experts – provides an accurate assessment of harm for policy makers.
“Our findings lend support to previous work in the UK and the Netherlands, confirming that the present drug classification systems have little relation to the evidence of harm,” the paper says.
Many law enforcement officers I’ve spoken with over the years have said similar things as this report’s conclusion – that alcohol is more problematic than others drugs. Time will tell if the powers that be here and in Europe will alter their positions on intoxicants based on evidence and research, or if they will continue to bitterly cling to the status quo.
